Over the Internet (using a computer)

You can get all necessary tax forms and instructions from the IRS Forms and Publications web site.

Most of these forms are in PDF file format and require that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. This is free software that you may download from the Adobe web site.

Go to the Adobe web site.

You will need to have a printer available in order to download and print out the materials on the spot. Another option is to request that the forms and instructions you need be mailed to you. The Internal Revenue Service will mail them to you free of charge.

By mail

You can also order IRS tax forms and publications by mail. This is another way to obtain the necessary forms if it is difficult for you to print them out over the Internet.

You can find instructions on how to order forms by mail on the IRS web site: Forms and Publications by U.S. Mail.

You can only order current year tax forms by mail. Processing and delivery of mail orders usually takes one to two weeks.

By phone

To order forms and publications using a telephone, call 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).

Follow the automated instructions. Live operators are available to assist you. You should receive your order within 10 days.

Pre-recorded messages about various tax topics can be heard by calling 1-800-829-4477.

The topic number for a pre-recorded information message about the Earned Income Credit is 601. To listen to a message about receiving an advance on the EIC, the topic number is 604.

By walking in

During "tax season" (typically from mid-January – April 15th of every year) any U.S. post office should have various widely used IRS (and state) tax forms available to pick up. They are free and can be obtained during normal post office business hours. Most public libraries have federal (IRS) and state tax forms available as well.
