Tax Credit Information
AN OVERVIEW
TaxCreditResources.org provides federal and state tax credit
information, particularly information that pertains to tax credit options for
low- and middle-income families. This site focuses on the Earned Income Tax
Credit program at both the federal and state levels. The Earned Income Tax Credit
program is one of the government’s most important anti-poverty programs
because it puts money in the hands of those who need it most.

To claim the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, you must file a federal tax
return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Your tax return must be filed
by April 15th (in most cases) for the prior calendar year (January-December).
The tax credit you receive may cancel some or all of the taxes you owe. Should
the tax credit amount exceed the amount you owe, you may be entitled to a cash
refund from the U.S. Treasury Department.
Our online tax credit Eligibility
Check can help you determine if you qualify
for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit, as well as
your state’s separate Earned Income Tax Credit (if one is available).
This Eligibility Check also helps you figure out how much tax credit you may
claim if you are eligible.
Some states offer a similar Earned Income Tax Credit to the federal government.
About 14 states and the District of Columbia currently offer the state Earned
Income Tax Credit. If your state offers these tax credits, you may be able to
claim them in addition to claiming them on your federal tax return. States which
currently have the Earned Income Tax Credit include: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon,
Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin. The state Earned Income Tax Credit can
be claimed by filling out and submitting a state tax return. If your state does
not offer the Earned Income Tax Credit, you can still claim them on your federal
tax return.
Tax forms are available from the IRS web site and from many local libraries
and post offices. There are also places such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) sites, where you can go to receive free help in completing tax forms
and in claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit. VITA
sites are open during tax season (January-April).
