About Tax Credits
AN OVERVIEW
TaxCreditResources.org is a web site that provides information
about federal and some state tax credits, particularly those that can be claimed
by workers with low income. A main focus of this web site is the federal government’s
Earned Income Tax Credits program (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credits program
is one of the U.S. government’s most important work promotion and anti-poverty
programs because it provides extra refunds to those who need it most. In practical
terms, this web site provides information about different tax credits, particularly
those available to low to middle income families.

This web site provides an online Eligibility
Check for those who want to
claim Earned Income Tax Credits on their tax return. This Eligibility Check
also enables you to find out if you are eligible for Child Tax Credits, as well
as your state’s separate Earned Income Tax Credits program (if one is
available). The Eligibility Check also helps you figure out how much you may
claim should you be eligible for these tax credits.
To claim federal Earned Income Tax Credits, you must file a federal tax return
with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Your tax return must be filed by April
15th (in most cases) for the prior calendar year (January-December). The tax
credits you receive may cancel some or all of the taxes you owe. Should the
tax credits amount exceed the amount you owe, you may be entitled to a cash
refund from the U.S. Treasury Department.
Tax forms are available from the IRS web site and from many local libraries
and post offices. There are also places such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) sites, where you can go to receive free help in completing tax forms
and in claiming tax credits. VITA sites are open during tax season (January-April).
Some states offer similar tax credits to the federal government. About 14
states and the District of Columbia currently offer state Earned Income Tax
Credits. If your state offers these tax credits, you may be able to claim
them in addition to claiming them on your federal tax return. States which currently
offer Earned Income Tax Credits include: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island,
Vermont and Wisconsin. State Earned Income Tax Credits can be claimed by
filling out and submitting a state tax return. If your state does not offer
Earned Income
Tax Credits, you can still claim them on your federal tax return. |
